Published article
We have just published some of our research project outputs in listed publication below. In the following article, we qualitatively collates and reviews existing Malaysian mangrove ecosystem services valuation studies, and assesses them against the best practices and lessons learnt from other ecosystem services valuation studies to identify its effectiveness in informing decision makers. This study has highlighted specific gaps in existing valuation study designs, outlined several lessons learnt, and take-home messages for future ecosystem services valuation studies in Malaysia that can better inform the decision makers in deciding on a more sustainable approach to managing mangrove forests.
In the next article, we aims to examine the status of and key threats to blue carbon ecosystems (mangrove and seagrass) in Malaysia and their potential for carbon sequestration. Additionally, the best practices and lessons learned from successful blue carbon initiatives from elsewhere, and the barriers and gaps faced by Malaysia in implementing these practices were highlighted. Finally, the paper outlines a way forward for blue carbon in Malaysia, emphasizing priority research and policymaking.

We held a Knowledge Exchange Webinar entitled It Takes a Village: Starting a Community-Led Blue Carbon Project from Scratch. Our invited speaker, Prof Mark Huxham from ACES describes the efforts needed to set up and run a community-led blue carbon project based on his experiences in Kenya. Participants gained actionable insights on using carbon credits to create synergy between communities, businesses and governments.
